This has been a week. One of great highs and lows, but victories either way.

In my post
Blame It On The Chiropractor I revealed that I was dropping out of a half marathon I had been training for since May. The reason for dropping out was Pain. This week's NSV's are a type of progress report.
Non-Scale Victory One - Lower Back Pain
If you follow me on
Instagram you will see my posts usually with hashtags #lowerbackpain, #lowimpactexercise or #rehab because I have been in constant pain for months. To be exact I believe it has been since May when I started training for a half marathon. Freaking PAIN, difficulty wiping my butt, numbness, tingling toes, can't stand, sit or lay down for any length of time kind of pain. So as you could imagine I was exhausted from the pain, yes strong pain saps strength, but also because I was not sleeping so everything started to just collapse. I honestly could not figure out how I was going to continue on. I stopped talking about it. Saying my back hurt just didn't seem to sum up all that was happening to me.
My chiropractor recommended
DDP Yoga. I probably would have passed if he hadn't shared his story of pain and how he healed his own back with the program after everything else failed to provide relief. I immediately went out and purchased the program and scoured the internet to find out all I could about it. I heard nothing but good things. I have commitment issues, lol but I decided to committ to the program for the 13 weeks at the beginner level. Today I have entered week five.
The NSV is that early in week three I awoke in the morning feeling different. I was pain free with minor stiffness for half a day. I was scared all day. Last week I awoke again without the pain and was able to jump right out of bed without pain. I was pain free for the entire day. I felt rested and vibrant. The pain was back the next day, but not with the same intensity. More like an aching tiredness, but I was able to do regular things and I spent the entire day out at a toddler party, walking for hours at a festival and shopping. Things I haven't been able to do in a long time. Today I awoke again without the pain, but I kept it light.
I am so grateful I have committed to this program and immensely thankful that my back is healing!
Non-Scale Victory Two - Roaming Pain
Can I confess. Even after telling you about lower back pain, this roaming pain business has been the scariest of all for me. I called it roaming pain because it seems to do precisely that, roam. There seemed to be no rhyme or rhythm to it initially, but over a matter of months I began to see that it presented itself most strongly over ovulation and menstruation. The pain moved from joint to joint over the course of the day. Caused serious swelling and stiff that sometime that joint was immobile. I will say that it seemed to contain itself to my wrist through fingers and ankles through the toes. At it's worse, the strength in my hands would be diminished for a few days as my finger tips would feel like they had nodules in them which made touching and gripping things painful. My feet at their worst I experienced weakened ankles and the sensation of walking on golf balls for a few days, which was very painful. Crazy, right?
As you can imagine, I began to think there was something seriously wrong with me. My symptoms looked like
Bursitis,
Gout and the scariest one that caused me to have a tearful breakdown,
Rhymtoid Arthritis or RA. With the other two a few things were not quite right, but with RA my symptoms were looking like a near perfect match.
The NSV? As part of the
DDP Yoga program, there is a suggestion for you to go diary and gluten free. I wasn't one hundred about this part. I wasn't eating any deliberate dairy like cheese on my food or creamy sauces, but I was still eating baked goods here and there. I did notice the pain was much milder, I had more energy and I was more functional. At the three week mark I decided to share in some ice cream with my daughter. Within hours my hands and feet started to swell and the pain was intensifying. By the morning I was on fire with nodules, golf balls and everything.
I have known for a few years that my tolerance for dairy was decreasing and every now and then I would get stomach sick if I ate ice cream but nothing like this before. It has been a crazy few days flushing out my system and getting thinks back to normal, but while I was in all that pain I was celebrating because now I have an answer. There may be some additional issues, which I will continue to pursue, but clearly I am allergic to dairy. Needless to say I am now #dairyfree!
